Why Beauty Sleep is Real - And How to Get it the Night Before Your Wedding

Beauty sleep isn't a myth -- there is science behind the idea that getting enough sleep can improve your appearance. Studies tell us that you can look more healthy and attractive when you're well rested and that getting enough sleep can fight the appearance of aging.

Sleep Deprivation and Bridal Beauty

Before you're tempted to stay up all night emailing vendors or working on wedding crafts, think about how it will affect your stress level and the way you look on your big day.

You may have a lot left to do before you walk down the aisle, but shorting yourself on sleep can leave you looking frazzled, unhealthy, and less attractive -- not qualities you want in your wedding day look. Need some more convincing? Check out this study that compared the photographs of 23 healthy adults between the ages of 18-31) who were photographed after a normal night’s sleep - eight hours - and after sleep deprivation - 31 hours of being awake (that makes me tired just thinking about it!). It turns out that people who rated their pictures thought they were less healthy, more tired, and less attractive than those with a healthy night's sleep.

Do you really want to be seen as less attractive on the one day that all eyes are literally, on YOU? Nope, didn’t think so. If you don’t sleep any other day during your wedding week, promise yourself you’ll sleep the day before your big day - even one night of being well rested right before your wedding day can make a difference in your appearance.

So now that you’ve agreed to sleep for at least 8 hours the day before your wedding, let’s convince you to get some sleep consistently leading up to your wedding day.

Long-term, sleep deprivation can have an impact on your skin's function and aging. An Esteé Lauder clinical trial found that people who get inadequate sleep have increased signs of skin aging and slower recovery from environmental stressors. Sounds like a lack of sleep long term will lend itself to dry skin, acne, rashes, fine lines, and wrinkles – none of which can really be combated overnight.  Sounds great, right? Nope, didn’t think so. But not to worry! You can put your best face forward on your special day with the following four tips:

1.    Plan to get a good night's sleep the night before your wedding day. Be careful about activities the day and night before your wedding. If you're having a rehearsal dinner the day before your wedding, schedule it for early in the evening so you can wrap up well before bedtime. And don't plan on a late night bachelorette party the night before -- hold that party at least a week out so you'll have plenty of time to recover.

2.    Don't leave tasks until the last minute. Don't end up with centerpieces to glue and vendors to check in with the night before your wedding. Work ahead as much as possible, use a day-of coordinator, and delegate tasks to your wedding party, family, and friends. You don't want to be left with too much to do when you should be relaxing and getting your beauty sleep.

3.    Maintain good sleep hygiene leading up to your wedding. Good sleep often doesn't happen just overnight. You can't expect to be sleep deprived one day, then bounce back with one night of great sleep the next. Good rest should be consistent. Maintain a regular sleep schedule and bedtime routine, so your body is in the habit of getting good sleep.

4.    Sleep on your side or back. Sleeping on your stomach can cause blood and other fluids to gravitate toward your face, which can increase puffiness. Instead, sleep on your side or your back, which offers better circulation and allows gravity to do you a favor.
